2nd Legislative District earns $7.7 million in final Capital Budget
Olympia -- The 2nd Legislative District won funding for four major projects with an appropriation of $7.7 million in the 2007-09 Capital Budget (House Bill 1092) that passed tonight. Rep. Tom Campbell (R-Roy) had worked through the session to gain support for projects important to his district.
"In this budget we have procured $2.7 million through the Dept. of Community, Trade and Economic Development for the Bethel Community Center ($1 million); the Eatonville Family Park ($200,000); the Rainier Lifelong Learning Center ($200,000); the Ashford Cultural Center & Mountaineering Museum ($800,000); and the Bridge for Kids in Orting ($500,000)," Campbell said.
"This is a wonderful budget with project funding for every part our large, diverse district," Campbell said. "It's the best Capital Budget our district has ever had."
Other projects in the Capital Budget for the 2nd District are:
From the Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation, the 2nd District won $2.6 million for the Bald Hill NRCA; $823,000 for the Mashel Riparian Habitat; and $568,000 for the Allen Forest critical habitat.
Campbell also worked to obtain $500,000 for the Nisqually Mashel State Park and $505,000 for the Voights Creek Hatchery as part of the State Parks & Recreation Commission Budget.
"We have met a wide variety of needs throughout my diverse district from the shadow of Mount Rainier. In the Ashford Project and the Bethel Community Center we have begun programs that will help our citizens enjoy our beautiful state," Campbell said. "And, from the continuing formation of Mashell State Park near Eatonville to the vital Bridge for Kids project in Orting, I am proud to present this package to my friends and neighbors in the 2nd District."
In addition, there is an alternate project in the budget for $200,000 for Orting's Gratzer Park, which Campbell said he's hoping will come to fruition in this budget.
Campbell noted another Pierce County project that received $1 million for the Chambers Creek pedestrian bridge near Steilacoom. He said the bridge, though not in the 2nd District, will be another great regional asset.
The measure, which originated in the House, passed the Senate by a vote of 46-0 last night and this evening, the House passed it on to the governor for her signature with a 96 to 1 vote (with one member excused). Campbell said very soon the governor will sign it into law.
