Columbian Mammoth

The Columbian Mammoth is the official state fossil

Washington’s official state fossil is the Columbian Mammoth. In 1998, elementary school students led a four-year effort to have this behemoth designated as our state fossil. The Columbian Mammoths died out about 10,000 years ago. Fossils of this huge beast have been found on the Olympic Peninsula.
