House, Senate approve Campbell's Veterans' tax exemption bill

OLYMPIA -- The House and Senate voted today to approve legislation to provide property tax relief for disabled veterans.

Rep. Tom Campbell (R-Roy) expressed "great pleasure" as the bill was approved and sent to Gov. Christine Gregoire for her signature.

House Bill 1019 gives veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces with 100 percent service-connected disability, under federal definition, and who have an annual income below $25,000, the same property tax relief on their homes as now is provided senior citizens.

"This is a great bill and a fair bill to our disabled veterans," Campbell said. "I've worked on it for about five years, and I'm honored that it was approved today."

Under provisions of the measure, military disability income is no longer included in the combined disposable income when determining eligibility for the senior citizen's and disabled person's property tax relief program.
